The FR-25 front roller replaces the caster bar and casters on your 25” Cal Trimmer mower and there are some nice benefits. It adds a little weight to the front of the mower which is helpful for rougher yards. It makes the blade cut at the highest contour of the yard to help prevent scalping and allows you to cut over the top of edges.
It also can help provide some striping effect as it’s used over time.The height adjustment process is the same as the original caster wheels however the actual cutting heights will be slightly lower by 1/8″ – 3/16″.
Back-lapping does not replace the potential need to grind the reel and bed knife, especially if there are dents or other areas of damaged edges. However, if the edges are in good shape and you want to help lighten and smooth the bed knife to reel contact, this process is the best way. It requires some patience but good instructions are included. The kit also includes a sprocket adapter, a 10 ounce container of #80 back lapping compound, and a durable paint brush. To summarize, back-lapping seats the blade and bedknife surfaces as the blades are turned backwards and applying grinding compound. During the process additional adjusting may be needed, but the end goal is to be able to shear paper across the entire width with smooth and light contact.
