Turning the Blank:

  • Mount the blank according to Diagram B.
  • Turn Nut on Jam Chuck to tighten in hole. Tighten enough to stop blank from slipping.
  • Brind up and lock tailstock once Jam Chuck is tightened.
  • Using sharp tools, turn the blank to a profile of your choice; reduce the bottom 1/4” as small as possible. This piece is just to allow tailstock support, it will be parted off so the bottom is smooth on the final piece.
  • Round the edge near the opening which will help the transition to the top of the flask.
  • When ready to sand, part off the support piece using a sharp tool such as a skew.
  • Sand the blank, gradually increasing sandpaper grits.
  • Finish the barrel using your choice of polish. Allow sufficient time for the polish to cure—refer to polish manufacturer’s instructions.
